Why on earth doesn't this thing have a tablet-like swiveling screen,
or a slide out keyboard? Why the clamshell? How much more would it
have cost to provide the tablet-like feature of tucking the keyboard
out of the way when its not needed? Browsing the web? Watching a
video? No need for the keyboard. Sure, it's great to have a keyboard,
but get it out of the way when it's not needed.
Also, why no touchscreen??? Why no graffiti? Sure, a keyboard is nice,
but so is stylus input when appropriate. Why not both?
Why not offer built-in 3G as an option? Sure, some may want to
piggyback off the phone, but there are times when using the companion
only would be useful.
Palm could have hit a home run with this product. An open platform,
lightweight, tablet-like, long battery life, smartphone companion.
Instead we get another crippled laptop.
What a *major* disappointment.
Mark
From what I've seen I don't see where this thing fits in. If you're
traveling
you'll
take a laptop anyway, because it does not take the place of a laptop. So
are
you
going to haul a Treo, a laptop and a Foleo? A better idea would be to
provide a
better interface from the Treo to the laptop.
Adam
Adam, I think your suggestion is unreasonable. First there are too many
PC makers creating unlimited potential for hardware gaffes. Second, most
run an OS developed by a smartphone competitor. Not only that, there
seem to be myriad versions of that OS in the marketplace. No one would
ever suggest that MS would ensure complications between PCs using its OS
(almost all of them) and efforts by a smartphone competitor to develop a
"better interface from the Treo" with PCs would they ;-)
I think Apple's proprietary hardware-software model and not licensing
its OS to all PCs is based on both those issues.
Finally, no one seems to be talking about the main advantage of the
Foleo over laptops. If you don't have unlimited funds or a business that
pays for it, many of us don't have wireless laptop cards and plans
giving us unlimited and ubiquitous access to the web and our email. WiFi
is not everywhere (and some of it is not free) and not every hotel
offers free internet access.
Anyone with a Treo already has and is paying for pretty much unlimited
and ubiquitous access to the web and email. But if one wants a larger
screen and or keyboard it is of little help. The Foleo takes the Treo's
web and email access and translates it elegantly to an easier to read
and manipulate form factor.
Will this be enough. Personally, I think it will depend on how well Docs
To Go runs on the new machine. If one is not to bring a laptop with him,
one still needs to work in Word or Excel and get that work to others. If
that suite of programs works sweet, the Foleo will surprise a lot of
folks.
Harlan
What I would like is a Palm-laptop interface that would allow the screen and
keyboard
of the laptop to be used with the Palm, perhaps via Bluetooth. For built-in
applications the Foleo functions could also run on a regular laptop given the
right
software and interface.
Adam
Adam, which do you think would be easier to do? What they did, or what
you propose? I assert that what you propose is not possible to do and
sustain for all laptops.

To respond, obviously drop the "nospan"?
