Car charger question

I have a Palm m515 which replaced an iPaq 3500. Yes, I made the move to the
bright side. With the Palm I have a mains charger that gives 5 volts @ 1 Amp
at a USB socket I can plug my charge/sync lead into. I still have the car
charger for the old iPaq, which I can also plug the lead into, and it is
rated at an output of 5.5 volts @ 700 mA. Can I use it for the Palm? I also
have a little charger that takes four AA batteries, which adds up to 6
volts, so I assume the Palm is able to cope with the 5.5 volts from the car
charger.
The only thing that worries me is whether the safety circuits for the LioN
battery are in the Palm or in the charger. Like, if the iPaq has them in
itself there won't be any in the charger, and if the Palm assumes it is in
the charger, then there won't be any safety when charging. And then there's
the little matter of polarity. Can the Palm cope with reverse polarity from
the charger if such a thing is possible?
Hmmmm. All sounds a bit complicated, but can some kind soul who knows a
whole lot more about this than I do help me here? I would love to be able to
use the iPaq car adapter, but I obviously don't want to risk damage to the
Palm. Thanks.
