I solved my hotsync problems with my Palm IIIse by using an IR adapter on my Laptop and syncing using the IR beaming ability of the palm. The IR adapter connects to the Laptop using a USB port.
Hi,
not sure if this is the right NG for this. I've just been given a new
laptop for work and I find it does not have a serial port. My Palm Vx
hotsync cradle of course is serial. My question is this: can I just
purchase a serial to USB converter for hotsync-ing purposes or do I have
to buy something special for this to work?
I borrowed a generic USB / serial converter and... it worked just great on my home machine. On my work machine, it insisted on asking for the drivers then crashing Windows XP... :-s
So, your mileage may vary. Note though that I had just the lead and no driver CD.
The IR adapter is available at Fry's electronic and other electronic stores. I recently check and it is about $25 but I have seen it advertised for less.
I have been using the IR sync for about a year and a half, and never had a problem.
I tried for about 3 years to sync using a Serial to USB adapter and never succeeded.
