Hotsync problem with old palm tungsten e to new computer

I have two tungsten E - on running a GPS mapsonic system and the other
my pda stuff. I had the GPS system hotsynced to a laptop and the other
to an old computer which has now ceased to be useable. When I tried to
hotsync my tungsten with pda stuff to the laptop it just hangs and i
have to soft reset the tungsten. I had put in the user name for the
pda into the laptop and it is different from the GPS user name. I have
tried re-installing the software on the laptop, but still no joy.

what am I doing wrong?e
