Those apps differ in how they operate, and it's been awhile since I've
compared them (i.e., things might be different now).
IIRC, Text Messenger tries to communicate with the recipient's own
carrier's (open?) SMS gateway using Vision. Ergo, you must know the
carrier of your recipient to send them an SMS.
I500SMS utilizes PdaApps' proxy server via a Vision connection. The
proxy then communicates with SPCS's own (non-public) SMS "gateway" to
send the message (when you set up i500SMS you need to supply your SPCS
login information). Since this is just like logging into your Sprint
account at sprint.com and sending a text message you don't need to know
the recipient's carrier (it's as if you sent the message using the
default "Automatic" delivery method).

Sprint is now pretty much up-to-date on SMS, albeit with a few glaring
flaws (e.g., callback numbers from non-SPCS SMSs do--or at least
did--not come across at all). If the above apps are working properly you
should be able to send/receive "normal" text messages, even to other
carriers such as VZW.
But "working properly" is a big if. AFAIK, both of those apps need to
know exactly how SPCS is operating in order to function. When SPCS
changes something, these apps can break. If PdaApps' proxy server is
down, you are SOL too (not that it goes down a lot, but I have seen it
reported). Regardless, I believe the consensus is that i500SMS is the
more reliable of the two apps.
That being said, with all of the changes going on--in just the last few
months--at the Sprint website (merger stuff) you'd really have to test
the apps yourself to see which, if any, suits your needs. Text Messenger
is free and i500SMS offers a free trial. If you don't use About the
only thing you have to lose is a hard-reset. ^_^
Please update this thread with your results! I have a Treo 650 and love
it. But so does my wife, and her old Palm IIIc is just about dead. As
about all she does is play Klondike with it, methinks a Treo 650 is
overkill, and she'd prolly complain about the size. An i500 would be
perfect for her--yet I know she'd miss the ability to send text
messages; as she does now with her cellphone.
