I don't believe that the person who originally brought the issue up
was discussing battery consumption while the unit was powered off.

Excuse me? It's obvious that powering up the device and performing a
task is going to consume battery power. However, how many times does
the typical user's PDA power up to perform an automated task?
Realistically, my device powers up frequently due to the plethora of
alarms I have set, but the main battery drain comes from when I'm
reading on the device. AFAIK, the only app capable of running in the
back ground on my Palm is RealAudio, which suprisingly enough uses
*very* little battery power after it turns off the display.
