TurboColor boot hangs on DSP init

I've recently started using my TurboColor NeXTstation again and
am experiencing a rather aggravating problem. When the machine
boots it hangs right after reporting:
IP protocal enabled for interface en0, type "10 MB Ethernet"
After a random period of time (usually many hours), it fails
to report finding dsp0 and its hardware address, and completes
the boot proccess.
I've found similar reports with no resolution:

I've tried replacing the battery and memory, but neither had any
effect. I thought I read somewhere (can't find the link right
now) that the problem was related to the ROM and that a v74 ROM
would continue booting if it couldn't find the DSP. So I swapped
the v71 ROM for a v74 ROM with no change in behavior.
I believe the DSP is flakey because I can't record sound with Sound.app,
but I can play sounds. However, sound files that will play on my
monostations won't play on the TurboColor. For example, I can record
my voice on a monostation with Sound.app and can't play it back on the
TurboColor. Running dsptest from MusicKit 4.2 just hangs at:
~> dsptest -v
Type 'dsptest -u' for usage info.
*** Must now say 'dwrite MusicKit DSPVerbose 1'
System has no QuintProcessor slot driver.
Number of DSPs found = 1:
_DSPVerbose set to 0x1.
DSP 0:
So my question is, has anyone else experienced this boot problem,
and if so, were you able to resolve it so the boot process won't
hang (and if so, how)? Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the
DSP on the motherboard is replaceable. Otherwise, I could just
replace it with one from a broken slab I've cannibalized for
spare parts.
