Boosting sound volume in a MacBook

I have a MacBook 2.0 GHz (last of the firewire models) running SL. As
an older guy with less than perfect hearing, one area of dissatisfaction
with it is the volume output which is often too low for me to hear
properly. For example, if I want to stream a youtube video while
washing dishes a few feet away, it just doesn't work for me. One
workaround is to download the video or mp3 and then play it back in VLC.
VLC gives me the option to play it back at 400%, which does work. I
have been doing this for a year without damaging the MB. The one
drawback is that I have to download it first, which with a 1 Mbps ISP
can be time consuming. Is there an app which would allow me to boost
the streaming volume above "100%" or some other workaround other than
external speakers? Or, as with Spinal Tap, turning it up to 11 :-)
