Apple's notebooks were starting to fall behind wintel ones and IBM was
more focused on producing PPC for game consoles and enterprise systems,
leaving Apple's needs unfilled.
From a competition point of view, it would have been much nicer to have
Apple move to Power chips, and then have IBM produce Power in different
"sizes" to meet the demande from laptop to super computer.

Righgt now, the 8086 is unchallenged. The only form of competition is
from AMD. While AMD has managed to force Intel to move the 8086 to 64
bits and also produce the Quickpath interconnect (originally meant for
the IA64), it still remains a chip hindered by its past.
On the other hand, by using the same chips that Wintel uses, it does
allow consumers to compare performance/features and this does put some
downward pressure on the Apple tax.
