What could be causing this?

Which graphics card is it - the std. GForce 7300GT? - I have seen a few
times that this card suddenly had died.

Try also to check that the cable in both the monitor and the graphics
card haven't got loosened. - I had a similar problem once with a 24"
Acer monitor, and it turned out that the screws were loose, so the pins
didn't get full contact. Screwing them tight again gave back the signal
to the monitor.

It also can be the DVI cable itself that has broke in some of the cores
or pins, so try also with another cable.

I do not understand this last status item, I am using and seeing the
display with no problem while typing this.

Atone time, I had two displays connected to the computer simultaneously.
The both worked or not worked simultaneously. I do not remember whether
my problem then was a sleep problem or what I now call pseudo sleep.
