Interesting. The "check for upgrades" function told me the latest was
3.0.15 and that page said it was released oct 27th. So it looked pretty
recent.

But going to mozilla.org confirms the latest is really 3.5.5.

I guess this must be a major upgrade and the "check for upgrade" only
looks for minor upgrades.

Firefox is set to do automatic upgrades to point releases, for example
3.0.1 to 3.0.2. The final security release of the 3.0 iteration was
3.0.15, in which an automatic update to 3.5 is enabled. In 3.0.15, try
Help>>Check for updates, and you should see it.

My FF is at 3.5.2 and Check for Updates is grayed out. How come
that?

Look at who owns Firefox.app. It's probably (though might not be*) your
admin account. You should be able to do updates from there.

There are only three accounts on this machine, Guest, mine and
admin, and Help/Check for Updates is grayed out in both my account
and the admin account.

Reason: FF greys out the update button if it doesn't have write access
to the application bundle (or relevant part of it?).

It's been so long ago that I don't recall from which account it was
installed, but most likely it was my user account.

installation will have asked you for an admin username/password
combination, but the file will be owned by the user doing the
installation.

I have been getting regular updates to FF, the last one, it seems to
me, just two or three weeks ago.
