Re: Airport wireless adapter - enough to go online

Hi everyone,
This may seem like a really stupid question so go easy on me. My
neighbor and I have been sharing our wireless internet for some time.
I have been running a MacBook Pro with no issues in respect to
internet connectivity (the router is on his side). I recently
acquired a G5 tower from a friend. Included with this was an airport
wireless adapter (no airport). see image

Is this antenna enough to provide wireless connectivity to my tower?

The antenna is a necessary component for getting Airport reception to
work on a PowerMac G5. (Without it, the signal will be extremely weak
and short range.)

Do I need the Airport as well or is this built into the G5?

The antenna isn't sufficient to grant Airport access on its own - you
also need the optional Airport Extreme card installed in the computer.

Most PowerMac G5s (all but the last generation) use a standard Airport
Extreme card. Apple stopped selling those cards a while ago, so you
would have to get one second-hand if it isn't installed already.

The last generation of PowerMac G5 (introduced October 2005, with dual
core processors) has a different Airport Extreme card with integrated
Bluetooth (unique to these models), and it also has an internal antenna,
so you obviously don't have one of these.

I cannot seem to find a way to configure this under network preferences.
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks

Have a look in System Profiler, and click on the AirPort heading (under
Network). If it says something like "No information" then you don't have
an Airport Extreme card installed in the computer and will need to get
one.

(Apple also sold an older "AirPort" card, which won't work in a PowerMac
G5. You need an "AirPort Extreme" card.)
