Has anyone seen or heard of this?
Have a 1 GHz G4 eMac with a Logitech mouse chained through a Pro keyboard (M7803). Frequently, the pointer freezes or vanishes.
When it does, sometimes the keyboard is also disabled, sometimes
not. Either way, it can usually be 'fixed' by unplugging the keyboard
from the Mac one to three times. maybe one of ten requires a re-boot.
Sometimes there is no apparent cause, but if I should happen to inadvertently slide the mouse optical sensor off the edge of the desk, that is guaranteed to trigger this.
I'm suspicious of the USB hardware, yet sometimes the keyboard keeps
working, and they're on the same line. Suspicious of the mouse, but
how could that disable the keyboard?
Nevertheless, the mouse is most likely, as I just had another episode.
Relaunching Finder would make the pointer reappear, but I couldn't move it. Typing made it disappear. Plugging in a different mouse made it
reappear and be responsive to that mouse. Still, how can a mouse disable the keyboard?
Some of the Logitech mice take too much of the power in the USB chain. Mac power handling on these older G4s are 500mAh per USB port. If you exceed this range, one or both will block the usability.
I've seen the same behavior on many different models right from Blue&White G3s through CPU upgraded dual 1,4ghz G4s with non-Apple mice and trackballs..
You can probably overrule the problem by connecting the mouse directly to USB port 2 with the Apple keyboard connected to USB port 1. I know this will take up both the built-in USB ports, so an balanced and powered USB hub might be necessary, if you have other USB devices connected like a printer, scanner etc.
