Need advice from any Mac linguist

I am attempting to learn how to add all possible
diacritics to English letters, in a TextEdit document.

Is the following website a good place to start?

<http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/mideast/encyclopedia/unicode.html>

I basically want to use the control keys on a regular
Apple keyboard to add any umlaut, cedilla, or other
diacritic sign to a regular English letter (character)
on-the-fly, so to speak.

My motivation is because I need to "preserve" the
pronunciation diacritics on personal names of foreign
authors of technical papers.

TIA for any advice about how to best achieve my goal.
