I also have a printer connected to my Ubunut box via a USB port. It is
an HP 5150. Again, the same problem, the iMac, via the wireless, can
find the printer with no problem. I can add it to my printers list.

I have a similar set up. I have a 6100 connected to a Windows computer
running XP.

I have CUPS installed on an Ubuntu box and it is set up to print using
SMBPRINT to print on the 6100. There is also a Samsung laser printer
connected
via USB to the Ubuntu box. CUPS has been set to allow printing of RAW
files.

Both print happily from MacOS, Windows, Linux, and since I have
Netatalk installed on the Ubuntu box, older Macs (system 7 up).

The computers connect to each other via two different WiFi networks
(one 802.11B and the other 802.11G) and hardwired ethernet.

The laser printer is defined to MacOS as:

ipp://xxx:631/printers/laser1

ipp://xxx:631/printers/windows
It uses the HP Officejet 6100 series Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.7
driver.

The HPIJS drivers convince the system that the OJ 6100 is a PostScript
printer, and as such CUPS prints directly to it. Everything runs
smoothly. But you gotta have the HPIJS or the GutenPrint drivers
installed, and you gotta know to use them, and you gotta know which
ones... all of which we could tell him if he would simply identify which
bloody printer he's using! My old HP printers still work under Leopard
(and Vista) although HP abandoned them, because I use 3rd-party drivers
instead of the HP-supplied crap. But I had to find the correct drivers,
and was able to because I had the correct name of the printer!

Thanks, finally solved the mystery. I went to this web site:

http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs

And it works like a champ. Thanks again.
