This is because since quite a while now they do a different kind of
sleep. You can install the "Deep Sleep" widget to set which kind of
sleep should be used. When you suspend to disk only (instead the default
safe sleep which writes the RAM to disk and then suspends to RAM to be
able to wake instantly) there's no power used at all, the thing is
electrically off.
But my iBook battery would last for weeks even in the relatively power
hungry type of sleep where the contents of RAM was being maintained. Why
would a MacBook battery last only 40 hours in any sleep mode? Is it just
that machines have a lot more RAM these days?
Did the iBook really last for weeks in RAM sleep? If so, there must have
been something really different about them...
And I am confused by your description of sleep modes. When a machine
goes to sleep the first choice is whether or not to write RAM to disk.
The disadvantage of doing so is that it takes time, but the advantage is
that power to RAM does not have to be maintained. Once you have RAM
written to disk then the next choice is whether or not to remove power
from RAM. The advantage of doing so is lower power consumption, the
disadvantage is that it takes longer to wake up (because RAM has to be
read back from disk).
All newer MacBooks first write the RAM to disk and then go to sleep (in
RAM). But you can also set them just to power off then instead.
