How will they be crippled?
Well, gee, for starters, let's take video hardware that could have [n]
GPU channels for a given price, but has to reduce that to [n-2] to
conserve silicon for the required encryption necessary to prevent
people sniffing raw digital video data off the bus (which is utterly
ludicrous anyway because that isn't the weak point of the video chain
- nobody who had a choice would pirate video that way).
Let's further take hardware that COULD play "hi-def" media but isn't
permitted to because it doesn't have the approved hardware encryption.
The encryption not being necessary for the playback of the media per
se, but merely for keeping the media stream "secure" between the
storage device and the speakers or screen. So the only reason people
are forced to upgrade is because they aren't *allowed* to use their
old hardware for new media, not because it's not compatible.
Let's further take hardware that is intentionally made oversensitive
to changes in system conditions - voltages, capacitative load on
signal lines, etc - to prevent people from probing and snooping crypto
material when again this is simply not the weak point in the system.
Read up on Vista's crippling DRM restrictions sometime. iTMS took some
big steps forward vis-a-vis audio and DRM, and forced essentially
everyone else's hand on that topic. Unless Jobs has a hand firmly
around Hollywood's scrotum (and it's hard to see how he could), it's
difficult to see how Apple could force a similar revolution in video.
