Paul, you didn't tell us what you're going to be doing in the Third
World. That could greatly affect a recommendation. My second question is
Why do you need all that electronic gear at all? I'll just make you a
target for thieves and larcenous border guards.

WARNING: Shameless self-promotion follows. I wrote Fred's Guide To
Travel In The Real World, published in 1989, about traveling in The
Third World. It's still 90% (or more) current and available from Amazon
resellers starting at about $6.

You might find it useful. Best of luck on your travels.

Thanks, Fred. I'll check out your book.

I wouldn't call it "all that electronic gear" - just a small laptop and
an iPod. The iPod is primarily for music, my Spanish courses, movies on
buses, and also my English-Spanish dictionary. I have a handy pocket
dictionary also, but I have gotten use to the electronic one, as it
conjugates the verbs in 15 tenses in a flash. I have gotten by in the
past with a 4GB flash drive and an iPod classic. And I can get a
Windows box in a cyber cafe for about 40 cents an hour, but the only
thing more annoying than Windows is Windows in Spanish. This time I am
thinking of renting a furnished apartment and settling down for at least
several months. I also like doing Skype on my own box. I am also going
to have to do some serious financial stuff over the internet, and I
really don't want to do it with a public Windows computer where I don't
have the slightest clue what is going on.
