It may be invasive, but how is it _confusing_? That's the word you used,

...and you do not consider that confusing, to a new Mac user who

of the registration page?

All that new user knows is that if he tries leaving out his
phone number, he is presented with another page telling
him that it is "required".

Geez, such a rant...

Not at all, just a tit-for-tat after Mr. Weston made his
sneeringly sarcastic statement to me:

"Yeah. Putting in the installation media and double-clicking
the clearly-labeled installer can get confusing."

Odd how you make all sorts of allowances for your friends,
while not cutting me any slack at all... NOT

Forgotten.

The problem is, there's nothing you actually have to remember. You're
handheld through the entire process of "install the Mac OS." *That's*
what prompted that part of my response. If, in fact, you had expressed
that you were talking about a *post-installation* process which is
avoidable, but not necessarily obviously so, you wouldn't have gotten
that response.

I saw a truck today that had "AAA Batteries / Delivered and Installed" on the
side. My first thought was: That's a really weird business model. How many
inept people have urgent need of skinny little battery cells?
