What's wrong with just creating a new user account for the techs to use?
With admin access (which you need to repair a machine, and can get
anyway), they will be able to read all your data unless protected with
encryption (true for any machine).
So if you do not have enough space to enable FileVault, then you have to
delete your account and securely erase free space (disk utility) AFTER
at least two backups on different disks (TimeMachine will do, for
another backup on a different disk use either TM again, or
CarbonCopyCloner - free).
After the repair you have to get your data back from your backups.
I'd recommend to switch to FileVault afterwards or use an encrypted disk
image (disk utility) for your sensitive information only.

So, for this exercise, you're suggesting that I secure-erase my home folder
(which is where it all is located), and rely on my TM backup (located on an
external drive) and my SuperDuper! Backup (located on a second external)?
What about the fact that some of those files originally were on my "main"
drive (in a folder sitting next to the System folder, Apps folder, Users
folder, etc.) -- they were there originally as a result of copying them from
my previous machine. Can I secure-erase the free space on the "main" drive?
