Time Machine - replacement machine - backs up everything again

I replaced a MacBook Pro with a new one, transferring everything during
installation.

I made TimeMachine accept the new machine as the same by this procedure:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
(telling TM the new MAC address for the machine name).

TM recognised the new machine under the same name, but still backed up
anew the full 200 GB.
How could I have avoided wasting this space?
Thinking now I could have forgotten to unmount and remount the disk,
could that be the reason?

TIA

Marc
