In a mixed network, it is better to block any virus as soon as it
tries to slip in. Even a mac, that has no known virus problem. But it
is up to you, how you want to handle that. Good luck....

If every Windows machine in a mixed network had virus protection, none
of the Macs in that network would need it.

You may be true. But I have a different approach.
May be, that philosophy dates back to the times, when we had virus
problems on the Mac (System 5 or 6 ?). They were not really harmfull,
but I prefer to work on a computer and dealing with a new virus was no
fun. Yes, and there was NAV9, which behaved like a virus...

The last serious Mac malware was over a decade ago. Until there's some real
threat, there's no point using Av on a Mac.

And considering that existing virus protection software for the Mac can
do more damage to the computers they're installed on than do good, they
shouldn't be installed.

What damage? I am using Intego and NAV on several macs and I had no
problem related to these programs during the last 15 months.

The OP of this very thread nuked his Mac y using NAV. NAV is more dangerous
than any current Mac malware, 'cause NAV can kill your Mac but there is no
current Mac malware. This is not a theoretical discussion, this is not a
matter of opinion. There is no current Mac malware, but current AV can screw
up your system. That means that it is a bad idea to use it.
