I am concerned about losing some files (especially Entourage...which indeed
I must change out _soon_) that have accumulated since my last clone was made
earlier in the week.

I originally said restore from your clone, then get whatever newer stuff
you need from your TM backup.

But now you're recommending and Erase & Install, right? If so, there might
be a problem retrieving the Entourage stuff: I'd have to reinstall Entourage
and once you do that, you can't simply reuse the message database. (I don't
recall the details, but I believe one has to jump through some hoops
archiving the database and then importing it into the reinstalled app.)

What is the harm in replacing the two Libraries? As log
as I don't update the clone until the problem is fixed, I can always use it
to do a full restore? And if that doesn't work, I can then do an erase and
install.

The point is, you're putting in all this effort to fix the one minor new
problem, when you've had much bigger problems all along, and regardless
of the current problem, you need to reinstall the OS anyway and then
determine if you need to bring the iMac in to Apple for repairs. The
clock is ticking on your warranty, and, if you really do have defective
RAM, nothing short of taking it in is going to fix it.

I understand that...but I still have 3 months, and an extra few days of
"extra caution" (which may be only "apparent caution") shouldn't get in the
way.

But I do hear what you're saying, and I do get your point.

(FWIW, I am also concerned about my Airport/Netgear Router settings, and how
they might be affected either with an A & I or (for sure) with a full erase
and install. I had a problem back in the fall that resulted when I attempted
to use the Netgear website to assure that I had the most-secure security
setting...tghe site trashed my setting, I lost my ability to get online with
my iMac, and it required help from Comcast to restore everything (Netgear
wanted to charge me for assistance, and sell me a service contract).)

Migration Assistant handles all that for you.

Well, I just want to be sure...after all, my comment about losing access to
my TM backups initially sounded incorrect, but then you understood what I
meant and saw that the comment was accurate.

But I have a more-basic question: Are you are saying that Erase & Install
along with Migration Assistant effectively provides the same
"save-and-carry-over-your-files,-apps,-and-prefs" benefits as an Archive and
Install? If so, what advantage would the latter ever offer over the former??

BTW: I'm certain you've mentioned it, but I can't lay my hands on it: What
do you use for an email client and for a newsreader?

Mail and MacSOUP.

I think that's where I'm leaning.

(BTW: I do know that it appears I am being "resistant" and/or somehow
"ignoring" the advice you (and JR) have been offering. But truly, I'm not. I
simply need a comfort level that derives from understanding what's going on
before I embark on a path, to help avoid any screw-ups that _I_ may
inadvertently cause (and it _has_ happened) because of my own lack of
understanding and consequent miscommunication and misinterpretation. Believe
me, I sincerely appreciate your help; and am even more appreciative of your
patience.)

I've mentioned this before. In sports, they call it paralysis by
analysis. You need to step up to the plate and swing at some pitches.

Unlike a lot of folks here, I don't have another Mac to fall back on if this
one is offline for a couple of days. These days in particular, I can't
afford to be less than cautious.
