Man, M&M are really at it when it comes to new hardware. Those
entries in the forum were written more than a year ago. Not only 45
nm Quad Cores are here, the i7 are.

Q6600 are on some of the cheapest Acers and HPs.

Well you have to adjust your hardware standards here. Its a Mac
group after all. My point was that if people that CAN choose DON'T
choose, that should say something. Mac people can't choose. Of
course the Xeons are wonderful CPU's. Just not wonderful for the
money. Its not very logical to pay 3 times or more for something
when you can get almost the same performance (and exceed it in many
areas) for a fraction of the price. My point was value.

Apple has never been interested in building systems that deliver the
highest possible computational performance per dollar. Rather, Apple
selects specific segments of the market that it wants to offer products
to, and designs products around the needs and budgets of those market
segments.

In the consumer desktop market, this might take the form of building
small form factor or all-in-one machines, even if this costs more (and
thus results in less performance per dollar) than building generic
minitowers.

In the pro desktop market, it takes the form of using the best
components available for the needs of demanding professional customers.
As in many other markets, the best components typically cost quite a bit
more than the stuff one step down.

As far as I can tell, this doesn't much bother the Mac Pro's target user
base. We're a video/film production company that works with high-end
formats on a regular basis, and we certainly have no complaints about it.

It mostly seems to bother a class of users who we could call
"performance enthusiasts" -- people who have an interest in having fast
computers, but can't justify Apple's high-end prices though the value
they create with their computers.

Apple doesn't care about performance enthusiasts.

Performance enthusiasts are, for obvious reasons, vastly
over-represented in online computer forums and computer hobbyist
magazines, and so tend to think they're an important market segment and
Apple should cater to them. But in my experience, they're a very small
fraction of users out there in the real world. I suspect Apple's market
research shows the same thing, and that's precisely why Apple doesn't
market products to them.
