I don't know what the percentage is, so it's good that the majority of
those files are in the backup in their original state! That's why I'm
hoping there will be some way to compare the files (e.g. by size) as a
way to make the process more efficient. If I was any good at scripting
there might be a way to automate that.
I'm really good at scripting.
You state the algorithm steps.
If you were preparing a couple 'ls' lists for
comparision by hand (but able to issue a 'sort'),
what steps would you take, prior to the need
for an actual human in the process.
Well, ideally the goal would be to examine the content and pair the
backed up files with their recovered versions, so that we don't have to
look inside those. That would reduce looking at 2,166 files by hand to
looking at a few hundred. We can't sort by filenames, creation dates or
modification dates; we may be able to sort by size (that can be done
easily in the Finder, of course) and may have to resort to using diff to
look at file content.
A complication, of course, is that the original folder contained
subfolders and those are gone. The files in the salvaged folder are
sorted into subdirectories by file type, whereas the files in the backup
folder are sorted into subfolders by other criteria. I assume we'd have
to first make the subdirectory structure match.
