My wife accidently deleted a folder full of files that she needed to

the folder (or whatever's left intact, anyway).
Looking around I've seen there are a few options- TechTool Pro,
VirtualLab, etc. Is there one known to be more effective than the rest?
Advice (other than the inevitable snarky comments about backing up)?
Recommendations for tools to use?
I'd recommend trying Data Rescue II. I haven't used it to recover
deleted files, but I've used it successfully to recover files from a
couple of crashed drives where all else failed. You can download and run
it on a free trial basis. That will allow you to recover just a single
file, with a restrictive size limit, BUT it will also show you all
that's recoverable, and you can then buy a license and register it, and
continue right from there.
I will vouch for Data Rescue II but be forewarned that you may have
difficulty sorting out the recovered files, as the name is not part of
the recovered data.
