I don't think it has to do with curiosity, it has to do with fear. We
live in the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC and SWMBO will not drive
across a bridge into the District of Columbia. She is afraid that she
will get lost and never find her way home.

She's heard of maps, I take it? This all comes from kids being driven
everywhere (specially where you live) and it never being considered
normal for a kid just to get on its bike and ride off.

In the case of D.C., street maps may not be much help. I lived in the
Maryland side for 15 years and became quite proficient in navigating the
District. But I had to give up on my normal mental maps and navigate by
landmarks. There are too many one-way streets that switch directions
unpredictably or are closed for various reasons. I rarely travelled the same
path twice.

To bring that discussion back around, this is an example of needing to shift
mental gears to adapt to a new situation. The same thing applies to the use
of computers. Unless you are going to stay in one place (i.e. one O.S. and
set of apps) you must accept and embrace change. Some people freak out at
the slightest change, others seek out the latest and greatest. In between
are the majority of users who accept change when thay need to.
