And having a well-thought-out, religiously-followed backup strategy is
much more important than having tools to fix problems after the fact. In
many cases of data loss, reformatting and restoring from backup can be
cleaner and faster than repairing the damage.

Personally, I tend to rely on Apple's Disk Utility to repair volumes. On
the rare occasion a volume cannot be repaired by Apple's Disk Utility, I
usually consider it not worth my time, and instead reformat and restore
from backup.

I agree with the Jolly Roger. Reformat and restore from backup.
I find that Apples Disk Utility works for me. For the price of one or
two of those repair programs one can purchase an extra hard drive for
backups. Also on apple's install disk contains "Apple Hardware Test"
software as well as "Apples Disk Utility" to help and solve problems.

As for movies, I temporally backup the movies I am currently working on
to a different hard drive. After burning the DVD, I remove the files
from the hard drive. I depend on DVD to DV software for restoring those
files if needed and yes there is some data loss in those.
