When I click on Time Machine I get a dialog saying The operation could
not be completed.  An unexpected error occurred, error code -43. What
should I do to fix this problem?

I suspect this problem has something to do with the brick, power
adapter, on my external hard drive failing. The backup file system got
all messed up and I had to erase the back up hard disk.  After erasing
and verifying the backup hard disk Time Machine still  produces the
-43 error code. Hence is it possible to repair or reinstall just the
Time Machine software like it can be done with Windows XP?

-43 sounds like your backup volume couldn't be found.
It could be that the volume isn't mounted/the drive is unplugged, the
drive
isn't correctly formatted, etc. -- anything that prevents TM from
accessing the target volume.

I guess you could try resetting your TM prefs (open the prefs panel,
change
the prefs, click OK; then set them all over again). If that doesn't help,
you might want to repair permissions check the backup drive via Disk
Utility.

Thanks you fixed the problem. Evidently no disk was selected for use
for backup. After using the Change Disk option in the Time Machine
System Preferences Dialog to select my back up hard disk Time Machine
started working. It appears Time Machine changed this option to No
Disk when the last backup failed.
Not sure if that is "normal" (i.e., defaulting to "No Disk" when a backup
fails). I wonder if locking the TM prefs panel would prevent such changes
(whether "normal" or otherwise) from occurring.

Sounds like Time Machine is one big headache. Count yourself lucky if
you can get it to work. Some people say you need to not use a firewire
hub. Well if you only have 1 firewire plug on your Mac how in the world
are you going to use your other fw devices? Once again an Apple app
which has a great concept, falls flat from incomplete design. But oh,
does it every seem great. Sort of like Leopard....one problem after
another. As I type this 2 apps are frozen, beach balls floating away.
Then when you look at all the hardware that isn't Leopard compatible
yet? What was I thinking when I upgraded? And to think I actually paid
for the upgrade. Was I nuts? No - just careless. Can't even get
Command_Option_Escape to launch to quit the offending programs. Lovely.

I use TM to backup to two external FW drives: one automatically; the other
manually on an "occasional" basis. I also use SuperDuper! to clone every
night to that "occasional" drive.

I'm not happy with my Mac's performance (not as responsive as it was when I
first got it last spring, and periodically peppered with plagues of SBBODs).
Some of it may be simply too much junk I've downloaded; more is due,I think,
to Entourage (which I've been intending to ditch for quite a while).

Bounce that off JR. He's the expert here on Entourage.

However, as far as TM is concerned, I can't blame it for any of my
aggravation, and would never think of being without it.

The concept of it is indeed sterling.

I will say, however, that if you are using $49.99 external HDs, you likely
_will_ have problems...both with TM as well as SuperDuper! and other complex
backup apps. (IMNSHO, of course. ;) )

I use name brand hard drives in a variety of FW external cases. Can't
isolate anything to hardware problems but you never know. I have a
Lacie case that seems to be very well made but its only for optical
media. When I put in a medium size hard drive it only recognizes about
130gb of it. One more reason to go Hackintosh or Mac Pro. I've often
found firewire devices flakey. Here today, gone tomorrow, back later -
all for no apparent reason. "Can't unmount"....that's a favorite little
message I get sometimes! :)
