Let me give some background. I was a UNIX kernel programmer for
a number of years back in the 90s and 00s. I have a G5 iMac that I
was attempting to back up using Super Duper...back up changed files.
It failed because my backup disk was too small. However, I cannot
account for ~80Gbytes of used space from my 233Gbyte drive. I have
used the du command to inspect the file structure and can only account
for ~126Gbytes of space used. However, the Get Info on my hard drive
reports 206Gbytes used....a significant problem. Any input?? FWIW, I
rewrote the du command on an SVR4 system because it was inaccurate
in the past. I don't see any hidden directories that could account for
this discrepancy. Any input gladly accepted.

That's very peculiar...

First thing I would do is run Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" function on the volume to rule out directory corruption. Barring that...

If you do a Finder "Get Info", does the "Used" size reported there match the "Used" size reported by 'df -h' for this volume?

Just to be clear, you're doing something like this, right?:

sudo du -csh /Volumes/name

Yeah, something like that.....found the problem though but I'm
damned if I can explain it. It's in
/Volumes/{name}/private/var/spool/cups and it's 102Gbytes....
Thanks for the pointers. There are scads of files in there that
are dated Nov 3 and are all just over a megabyte each.....That
is a mystery, but I'm gonna look at the cups commands for some
degree of guidance. I know I have not spooled millions of print
jobs a couple of weeks ago.....
