A friend of mine has a PC (with XP, I think) with a Linksys wireless
router and Verizon-supplied modem. His wife has a MacBook. The network
works fine, except when he shuts down his PC, the router and modem power
off,
How are the router and the modem connected to power? Are they, for example,
on a UPS which is also connected to the WinBox, and does the WinBox have
software controlling the UPS?
Alternatively, are all three (WinBox, router, modem) on the same power strip
or similar and does he 'shut down' the WinBox by hitting the 'off' switch on
the power strip?
so then the Mac can't get on the network. My friend is clueless
about computers, and he wants to pay me to drive down (45-minute drive)
to help him with this, but I'd like to fix it over the phone if
possible. Does anyone here know of a setting in Windows that's prompting
a network cutoff at shutdown?
Depends on the version of Windows, but there may be a UPS option in Control
Panels.
