Last weekend a cousin got a new iMac and was eager to give me a demonstration. Well, he succeeded. I'm convinced. OSX is really a marvel.

Today, I checked the least expensive 24" iMac and I figure I need a larger HD. What I don't undertsand is why it costs $150 more for a 750 GB disk than for a 320 GB since a 750 GB disk is hardly worth $150. Does Apple have special HD made for them?

Why does any PC manufacturer charge more for some upgrades than they normally cost?

My previous computers were clones and I paid for what I got. Let me check Dell...

Click XPS 420. Yeap, the 750 GB HD is also $150 more! Which means that, having enough room for 3 or 4 HDs, I'd buy the 750 GB afterwards and get the 320 GB for free for backups. Which you can't do with an iMac.

Notice that, for $800, you get a much better processor, though:

Apple:

2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Dell:

Intel® Core™2 Q6600 *Quad-Core* (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB)

You also get 1 GB more RAM

If you put $100 more, you also get a better video card:

Apple:

Generic ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
Frequency 600 MHz
Memory 256 Mo DDR3 1400 MHz

Dell:

Generic ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Frequency 800 MHz
Memory 256 Mo DDR4 2200 MHz

Now, we need a monitor. Is there any way of knowing what the iMac's monitor is exactly? Since, countrary to the iMac, I can choose my monitor, I certainly wouldn't pay Dell $440 for a 24". I recently saw a 24" Samsung at FutureShop that was really superb. $289, guaranteed for 3 years...

So, altogether, that's $1,200, which is 2/3 of the iMac, for a much better computer. Better CPU, better video card, more memory. I know Macs are more expensive, even my cousin agrees, but not that much expensive. What is it I'm missing?
