Does AppleCare?

Last weekend a cousin got a new iMac and was eager to give me a demonstration. Well, he succeeded. I'm convinced. OSX is really a marvel.
Today, I checked the least expensive 24" iMac and I figure I need a larger HD. What I don't undertsand is why it costs $150 more for a 750 GB disk than for a 320 GB since a 750 GB disk is hardly worth $150. Does Apple have special HD made for them?
Also, though he contends that Macs are much more solid than ordinary PCs, my cousin suggested that I buy AppleCare. He was so proud of his new computer that I didn't dare ask why.
The first PC I had had a video card problem after 2 months. It was replaced free of charge and worked for 8 years. The one I now have has worked flawlessly for 6 years. Had anything gone wrong, it would never have cost the price Apple is asking for AppleCare for... a 3 years warranty. A video card, for instance, is hardly worth more than $70. Even a HD is not worth as much as AppleCare.
Does it often happen that Macs work for 1 year and not for 3 years? Why is Apple asking 10% of the sale price for this warranty? (On this model. The price is the same on cheaper models!) Given that you pay more to get Mac quality, shouldn't the warranty be included in the price? The way the deal is set up, it looks as though Apple didn't have confidence in its own products.
Unless Mac users are all into overclocking and ruin one CPU after another?
I'd luv to get a Mac, but I have problems with the arithmetics of the price tag. Is Apple also overcharging on the computer itself or only parts and warranty?
