So this morning, the DHL man handed me my fresh-from-eBay retail copy of
Tiger (DVD installed 10.4.6 - I'll worry about the updates to .11
tomorrow after SU pulls them overnight) and I've made the jump from
Panther. Went with the "erase and install" option after deciding that I
can either re-install from original media, re-download, or just plain
pull pretty much anything I really want/need from my backups.
Meanwhile, with the new install active, I'm going crackers with these
idiotic noises the machine keeps making for various UI activities. If I
want a computer to make noises, I'll tell it which ones to make, and
when! Needless to say, I have no use for these stupid bonks, buzzes,
riffles, whizzes, thumps, and everything else it's doing. So I figured
I'd turn them off. But I'm damned if I can figure out HOW! Seems to me
that when I ran into the same problem back when I made the move from 9.x
to Panther, it had something to do with Appearance, but that's been
almost 2 years ago now, so I can't be sure, and I can't see any options
for getting rid of them under any of the preferences panels I've looked
at so far. (Read: Any panel that looks like it even remotely makes
sense)
Is there a way to shut my machine up under Tiger.6, or do I need to wait
for the updates? Or is Apple so convinced they know what everybody wants
that they don't include a way for me to get rid of these stupid,
obnoxious, utterly pointless noises? Or am I just too stupid to find the
place I need?
The Help menu isn't giving me anything useful, and Googling gives me
information overload about almost every aspect of sound, but nothing
that points me to what I need. Maybe my Google-fu is weak?
Help! I want my machine to just do what I say, and not gibber at me
about it!
There are a couple of things that make sound in 10.4 that didn't in
10.3, notably copying a file, throwing stuff in the trash, emptying the
trash, or changing the sound volume.
You can turn these off from the System Preferences>Sound Control Panel.
Uncheck "Play user interface sound effects" to get rid of the copy,
AUGH! I'm stupid - Purely friggin' *STOOOOPID*!
That was the *FIRST* place I went, and I've been there at least a dozen
times since. And every single one of them until now, I've managed to
"look right through" the set of dinguses up at the top to change from
looking at what speakers the sounds come out of, to controlling what
comes out of them! I must have simply been at it too long, or too
focused, or something.
Excuse me while I go pound my head against a wall for a while, then
crawl under a rock until I can get over the embarrassment. <sigh> 20-odd
years as a Mac guy, and can't find the damn control panel - Utterly
pitiful...
trash, and empty trash sounds. Uncheck "Play feedback when volume is
changed" to turn off the click when you change the sound.
The ones that were getting to me worst were indeed the trash and copy,
Both of which had been getting a LOT of use yesterday in the process of
reorganizing and pulling back stuff after the install.
Thanks, Mike. Sometimes these things are *TOO* obvious - obviously...
