Brand new MX700, prints fine via USB. However, connected via my little
lan (Mini, MX700, and ADSL box all on a small NetGear switch), I'm
having the devil's own job getting it to print via the LAN.

You have to configure it with the USB cable connected - it gets
192.168.1.3 which is OK. The utility program can get the ink levels OK
via the LAN. I downloaded Canon's CUPS driver for this printer, and have
tried it with IPP and lpd, but in both cases it just claims the printer
is busy (hah, busy doing nothing), and it will try again in a few secs.

Printer IP settings look OK, too, IP address and netmask match everyone
else. I've also had this problem at work, where I had a lot of trouble
getting a MacPro to print to a couple of HP printers on the company LAN.

Any pointers as to things to check would be appreciated.

The canon site (you checked there via google

Google? Why Google?

first, right) says you need
to download the 10.5 drivers for it to work in that OS.

Rather, I went to www.canon.co.uk, clicked on the downloads link, and
was sent to software.canon-europe.com where the same set of downloads is
available as via your link, except that the CUPS driver is more recent -
so thanks for that.

There's also the downloadable installation manual and a pdf for the
network install manual:

OK. Looks identical to the paper copy I have (or the first 32 pages,
anyway, my paper copy has seven other European languages in it :-)

So, firmware, drivers, and utilities are up to date - and now, for some
reason, it works. Not sure what I did, but I was quite tired last night
when working on it.

Thanks.
