That explanation is a little garbled, but it's basically right. However,
it doesn't apply to the type of LCD used in modern colour monitors.
Kevin, I think you are right. I usually keep my Mac on 24-hours a day.
I need to start shutting it down when I'm not using it.
No need. In fact, shutdown and startup put undue stress on the components
in the Mac.
You will get best results by using the 'Energy Saver' System Preferences
panel to turn the display off and put the computer to sleep before too
long has passed. This saves power, wear on components, and reduces screen
burn-in to the point where it probably won't happen at all.
Screensavers used to be a technical tool designed to reduce burn-in.
However, with current technology they can turn the display entirely off,
which is better still. And most of them are designed with the
understanding that the 'off' colour for a display is black, and that's not
true for LCD displays. So screensavers are now amusement programs, not
utilities.
