I tend to sweat a lot sooner than most people. Not sure why.
Perhaps its because I don't consume any salt.
If you sweat and don't consume any salt, you are asking for
trouble, big time. Look up "hyponatremia" before you severely
injure yourself.
I've been salt free for years. Its a myth. You need sodium, not
salt.
Where do you get your sodium from? I mean you personally.
Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, sprouted grains/legumes/lentils/beans.
All raw. Though, to be accurate, heat doesn't diminish mineral content
like it does with vitamins.
Your body also needs chloride. Salt gives you both. You could use
potassium chloride instead of salt to get the chloride, but you still
need a source of sodium.
Well then my tolerance of heat disproves all that I guess. 15 minutes
of slow situps in a hot sauna with no water is a pretty good test. Of
course if I've eaten within 4 hours of that, it just won't happen.
Better to do it midday having eaten nothing before.
You really want to get healthy? Read about 100% raw organic food
mono eating. Combined with water fasting its a sure fire key to
extended health and longevity.
Sorry, but I'm a runner; runners need fuel. Fuel is spelled "C A R B
S".
As a runner I thought you'd bring that up. :) I'm presuming you're
eating what most runners do - lots of refined carbs. Correct me if I'm
wrong there. Nevertheless, what I don't understand is why so many in
the running community eat refined carbs at all, when unrefined carbs are
so easy to consume. White/brown rice, normal/whole wheat pasta are 2 of
the most common examples. Yes it does take a few minutes longer to
cook. But to be able to push yourself 18 hours after your last meal
with no energy loss (and 18 hours apres eating means you've got nothing
digesting, so its not restraining your energy level), is an amazing
source of energy. Sadly the refined carbs usually force people to
consume food at far shorter intervals, thereby meaning they are
exercising while the body is coping with food digestion. It just doesn't
seem optimal. Then factor in the heat of summer (Phoenix must be
brutal!) and it does become a mystery. Is it laziness, lack of
convenience?
Further, my muscles need protein in order to rebuild themselves
after runs. I'm not going to risk injury and my health with an unproven
and counterproductive fad diet.
Fad? Its just simple food. Mono-eating is amazing. Here's the
premise:
Wait until you're really hungry - no snacking!. Then eat just one food
- the food you crave at the moment. Of course it has to be a whole,
natural, raw food. Like a vegetable, fruit, nuts, seeds, or something
sprouted. (If you crave junk, that has to be eliminated until you
don't. Usually takes 2-4 weeks. Or fast on water for a few days to
vastly accelerate the cleansing process.)
Anyway, eat til you're full. (Its really hard to overeat much on just 1
food!) Wait at least 3 hours. Do it again. Admittedly, you need to be
near a grocery store for this to really work or live in a large
household so you have a wide selection of food at all times. The idea
behind all this is that the body should crave what it needs at that
moment. That's what it wants, so that's what you should eat right then.
Its simplicity is unnerving. It addresses so many health issues. Now
combine that with frequent water fasting (1 day a week, and one 40 day
fast a year) and you've got a real health program. Herbert Shelton
wrote some great books on fasting that many athletes are only now
recognizing. He lived to 95. Supervised over 100,000 fasts so he has a
little bit of experience. Most fasters live very long lives. They are
often very active in their 90's. And what's even more interesting, they
don't suffer from stiff joints which almost every elderly person does
these days.
