Some iTunes issues

A friend of mine was having issues with music on her computer so she
asked me to take a look at it. Unfortunately, I have no clue as to
what is going on so I'm asking here in case someone has a better idea
why the following things are happening.
When her iPod was hooked into her computer and later, my computer,
iTunes would only be able to access to songs about half the time. The
other half of the time, it said that the iPod needed to be restored to
its factory settings and no file on the iPod was accessible through
iTunes.
We also tried to move her music files from a DVD copy from her old
computer to her new computer. There were over a thousand songs in the
collection, in mp3, m4p, m4a and wav formats. The mp3s and wavs would
open in iTunes but not the mpeg-4 files. The m4p and m4a files would
open iTunes but the songs wouldn't be added to the library. At first,
I was worried the songs were DRM-protected and that was the cause of
the issues but when dealing with songs from the iTunes store, I'm
normally prompted to give the authorization information before a song
won't work. Also, I was told that the files were made by copying her
CDs using iTunes on her old computer so there shouldn't be DRM on the
songs in that case.
If you could provide me with an explanation for either issue, I'd be
greatly appreciative.
