I have a MacBook Pro with Intel Duo Core, 1 Gig RAM, Processor Speed
2.16 GHZ currently wit OS X 10.4.10 installed. Because I need some of
the features with 10.5 (Leopard), I have bought that software but all
is not well.
I follow the steps (not very far, alas) of the instructions but when
the system reboots before installation really begins, the disc drive
sounds like it's laboring to mount (rising and falling whirring
noises) for about 2 minutes and then ejects the Leopard installation
disc. I tried this several times with the same result and also tried
one of the alternatives suggested in the manual for mounting the disc
but again, same unhappy result.
Because my daughter also has a MacBook I was able to check to make
sure it wasn't bum software and confirmed that it wasn't.
Meanwhile my disc drive works fine for other tasks such as playing/
burning DVDs and playing CD music. It just won't read that
installation disc when it reboots (it does recognize the disc for step
one, however).
I have a MacBook Pro and my experience has been that the optical drives
are extremely finicky about disks that are even slightly imperfect.
When it has trouble, the symptoms are exactly as you describe-- rising
and falling whirring noises as the drive repeatedly spins up and then
down. I still use my old Powerbook for ripping audio CDs because of
this. If your Mac is still under warranty I'd consider whether to try
getting the optical drive replaced.
In the meantime, it should be possible to use your daughter's MacBook as
an external optical drive. When starting up the MacBook, hold down the
"T" key until a large Firewire logo appears on the screen. That puts it
in "target disk" mode, and it'll act like a Firewire drive. If you put
the Leopard disk in it and connect it to your Mac with a Firewire cable,
your Mac will see the disk and should be able to use it.
