Any further ideas for recovering the machine or apps?
I find it very odd that the Mac will boot from the HW Test CD but not a
boot CD.
with the word loading. Then the hardware test application appears. The
only options after running the hardware test are shut down and restart.
Restart fails with the progress bar hangup.
If it starts off the CD, it's booting.
Are you very, very certain that you are using the correct CD for that
model of Mac?
Yes. In fact the system install and hardware test cds are the only
original cds (That came with the computer) which were passed on to us. I
have them along with the original documentation.
Possibly damaged? Can you get hold of a retail boot disc? (I have a
full version of 10.3 that is legal and available... Where are you
located?)
I will try cleaning the cd before troubling anyone. I am in Allentown,
PA.
She says YES!
If not, double check.
If so, it sounds like a power supply or logic board problem. Probably
main board.
Can you get your hands on a USB or Firewire external case and
installing her drive in that? Then try mounting it on a different Mac.
I have never done anything like that. I would have to buy one. In any
event, I will make sure to keep the G4's internal drive.
Indeed.
New Information! My daughter says that there was a two hour power outage
before the problem occurred. The machine is on an APC UPS, so she did
not think to mention it before.
Did the Mac experience a hard shutdown due to power failure?
