Scanner Question

I have lots of pictures taken over the years before digi cams. I'd like
to scan them and eventually burn them to DVD before they become ruined
with old age. Which scanner would ya'll recommend that would do a good
job without costing me an arm and a leg (under $500). What features
should I look for/consider? Thanks.
