osX and windows separate screens w/ext monitor?

I am about to purchase a macbook and will be installing Vmware Fusion
and winxp on it. I'll explain my need (or want) of having windows. I
am a musician and use Winamp when I practice(which is not available on
mac) and have not found a program yet with the same hotkeys I am so
used to. Really as is it looks I will only use Windows so that I can
use winamp to practice (which I do DAILY as a professional musician).
Everything else I look forward to doing on osX. I also will have
windows on it anyway to keep my bases covered for anything that comes
my way (use only as last resort, so tired of windows).

The question:

If I have Fusion and windows with an external screen (I'd get the
adapter and hook it to my Dell '19 flatscreen LCD so that I can use
them both as one desktop) would it mean I could work it so that I can
use the laptop screen as windows and the externals osX? In doing
that I do not have to open and close windows and have space to work on
my screen, just bounce back and forth as if I have two computers, only
as one system. I can simply open the windows pane the size of the
laptop screen or vice versa. (By the way, when using the monitor I
will also use a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can put it on my
sliding keyboard drawer I am so used to).

I assume I can put the dock on either side of the screen, not sure if
it splits it up if on the bottom or top. I figure if osX is on
external screen on the right I can put the dock on the right side of
the desktop.

Thanks for your help!
