I'm having some real problems backing up some lossless audio files. So
many get this error code. What is irritating with OS X is that it stops
the entire copying procedure because one file can't be read. It would
be so much better if a pop up window came up ASKing the user if they
want to skip this or not. Anybody know what (Error code -36) means?
And do lossless (ape and flac) files often have problems getting copied?

Any time you want to find out what a numbered error message means, head
over to http://appleerrorcodes.com. ; )

Error -36 happens to be an I/O error. You might take a look at your
system and console logs for more details.

From what, and to what, are you copying?

I wonder if the problem is the size? Lossless files are obviously much
bigger. Here they mention this:

d-drive-problem.html
"Is any single part of the project bigger than 2GB ? If so then that
might be the problem. I've just had to move some DVD *.iso's from one
computer to another, and both Findes as well as 'Path Finder' refused to
move them instead giving errors. The iso's in question were in the order
of 3.5GB - 4.5GB.
My solution was to move them using commands in Terminal."

Can anyone direct me to a website that lists common Terminal commands
with a good explanations for each? (I'm kind of raw with Terminal.) JR
- I bet you have one up your sleeve.....:)

Try using the 'cp' command:

cp /source/path/to/file /dest/path/here/
