I was about
to buy one in May when I heard about this. I've googled and read up on it,
but still haven't heard about any statement by Apple. I certainly don't
want to buy a computer, especially one that expensive, with a screen
intensity variance of a full fstop top to bottom and that only represents
260,000 colors when it's advertised to show millions. I need to make a
decision soon. Anyone know anything more about this situation?

Wait. This sounds awfully familiar. Just last year, Apple was involved
a class action law suit where people were complaining that *MacBook*
displays were not able to display millions of colors - instead they
display thousands of colors and use hardware dithering to fool your eyes
into seeing millions of colors.

I believe this limitation is pretty much standard across all popular LCD
displays. My take on it is that LCDs, when compared with CRT and other
types of displays, are less suitable for high-end color display.

This image will illustrate the problem I'm referencing:

This does show it, though not as dramatically as the video does.

Display the image in your web browser, then tilt the display up or down
(or look at the display from below by lowering your head to the level of
the keyboard), and you will see color bands, like so:

Is this the problem of which you speak?

The YouTube video I saw showed the difference in colors between the top and
the bottom of the screeen, about one fstop difference, quite significant
and of some concern to me. This is while looking straight on at the panel.
They also showed the color banding when the panel was viewed from extreme
angles, either side to side or top to bottom. Since I rarely view my
computer while standing on my chair, I'm not concerned with this issue. I
guess I would be if I did a lot of collaborating with several people
gathered around. In that case, I could justify going to the 24" screen
anyway, which doesn't have these issues.
