Guys, I am neither a computer nor a phone expert, but my understanding has
always been that "phone jacks" (RJ-11) and "ethernet jacks" (RJ-45) are
both in fact simply standardized "modular plug" designs, both of which are
used in different situations both for phone purposes and for other data
and communications purposes . . . ???

Thanks for joining the discussion!

Briefly, the terms used in Wikipedia to describe (in the context of a
Macintosh laptop computer) the two different connectors under discussion here
are "modem" for the four conductor one and "ethernet" for the eight conductor
one. Elsewhere in Wikipedia the terms RJ-11, RJ-14, RJ-25 are used to
reference the four conductor connector, depending on whether it provides
connections for 1, 2, or 3 phones, and RJ-45 for the eight conductor one
which can be used for 4 or more phones.
