Window highlighting problem

I'm having a strange problem with highlighting in windows. Every item
which is highlighted is drawn with a thick black rectangle border. If a
Finder window is open (list view) and I select an item, it is both
highlighted and drawn with a black border. Then when I begin to scroll,
the highlighted item moves as I scroll, but the black border remains in
the original place. This problem just started today. Anyone have any
ideas how to get rid of it? I'm running OS X 10.4.11.
