Perhaps, but reliability might be one reason to
keep older/smaller disks around. I still use
an old Quantum 8GB (5,400 RPM) disk in a server that
has ran 24/7 since 1998 with minimal downtime.
It produces a lot less heat than modern disks
and with only one head and platter, is much less
likely to suffer a catastrophic failure in service.
I also follow a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" approach. In
general, I'm assuming that there's a desire for more total HD storage
capacity that is prompting action to go acquire more capacity, not
that there's been a hardware failure. Afterall, new HDs now have MTBF
of 750,000 hours (Seagate 7200.11).
My point was more alluding to what most of us have probably been
guilty of at one time: having a veritable 'tower' worth of multiple
small extrnal HDs attached to our system, each one with its own
cooling fan blowing away. Given that three 160GB drives can be
replaced today with a single 500GB for only $100, its cheap enough
(for at least some of us) to be willing to spend some money to improve
"Quality of Life" factors such as reduced noise levels, and it can
also have benefits elsewhere, such as in fewer power cords to plug
into the UPS (both less sphaghetti mess as well as a longer battery
runtime before shutdown due to lower power draw). Its a YMMV.
