Reading about a computer in Popular Mechanics is like reading about
hedge funds in Cosmopolitan. Its a poor review. There are so many
inconsistencies in it its not even worth commenting on.
Let's break down the crucial speed components: CPU, RAM, video card,
hard drive. Now comparisons are easy. High end PC people are
overclocking their CPU's to insane speeds, Mac people aren't. PC people
enjoy DDR-3 ram at speeds up to 1600 mhz. Mac people are stuck at a
pokey 667mhz in DDR-2 or with this's year Mac Pro model 800mhz. WHEW!
PC people are always at the cutting edge of video card technology, Mac
people are at least a year behind. PC people often have 4 x 10k drives
(Sata Western Digital Raptors) in Raid 0. This is almost unheard of in
the Mac Pro world. And of course impossible in all other Mac models.
So we have huge, clear advantages in all the important parameters for
the PC world.
That is why the fastest performing machines running Leopard are not even
made by Apple! And what is even more amazing is that almost none of
these machines run 2 CPU's. That is the only advantage of the Mac Pro.
But it still doesn't help the Mac Pro get to the top. The PC's run OS X
faster for a fraction of the cost.
This review is something along the same lines as the drivel you see in
Consumer Reports.

Check this out:.
Popular Mechanics says that Macs run Windows Vista better than PCs
designed to run the operating system. The magazine published an
analysis based on user feedback and performance benchmarks for
similarly equipped machines, using a number of 'real world' tests to
evaluate the machines. Testers were asked to set up the computers
right out of the box and "explore the machines through everyday tasks
such as Web surfing, document creation, uploading photos, downloading
Adobe Acrobat files and playing music and movies through Media Center
and Front Row." The magazine said that in both the laptop and desktop
showdowns, Apple's computers were the winners. Results found that
both Apple computers ran Vista faster than the PCs did.
"Simply put, Vista proved to be a more sluggish operating system than
Leopard. Our PCs installed some software faster, but in general they
were slower in our time trials. Plus, both PCs showed weaker
performance on third-party benchmarks than the Macs. Our biggest
surprise, however, was that PCs were not the relative bargains we
expected them to be. The Asus M51sr costs the same as a MacBook,
while the Gateway One actually costs $300 more than an iMac," said
the report.
