If Apple wanted to use Axxxx number as the model designation, they
would prominently display said designation. The don't, ergo they
don't. In fact they make no use of this number in interacting with
the public, as shown by the fact that putting in these model
numbers as a search term on Apple's Web site yields zero hits.
Apple makes it difficult to use these numbers. Few if any other
sellers of Mac accessories use these numbers, as the OP found when
searching for a battery. The Axxxx is just not particularly
useful. This is difficult to understand in what way?

No, that's not quite right. All of the battery manufacturers list
out all kinds of A numbers. Just not the A1055.

I cannot find the A1055 listed anywhere except in places reselling
the thing.

Hence my original suggestion.

<Crankpot> As a further sideways rant, the GUI on the apple support
site seems to have been designed by the same grunts who designed the
iTunes GUI. Very counter-intuitive. There may be ways to find
everything you need (maybe) but much of it is not obvious, which is
the goal of proper GUI design.<Crankpot>

Apple's Web site has had its ups and down in terms of usability and is
currently not at one of its ups. It now serves up the hype du jour,
first and foremost. There used to be a useful set of tabs to get you
towards the right part of the site to find what you were looking for,
but this is not so much the case now.

I get a really big kick out of Web-based instructions for connecting to
the Internet or troubleshooting Internet connection problems that way.
Or, for that matter, the fact that you can't call our local Apple store
and make an appointment with the "Genius Bar." You can only get an
appointment via the Web site. Handy if your computer is broken...

Apple's customer service is great until after you've walked out of the
store with your purchase. This has been the case for over 20 years and
has always been Apple's biggest failing. Fortunately I have rarely had
need of such services as my Apple products have been really reliable-
four repair issues in 22 years (video board on my iMac Rev B, new
display and new AirPort card on my iBook and then a new logic board as
the tech cracked a connector on the board when installing the new
display; the iMac cost me $200 in repairs six years after I bought it,
and the iBook was covered under AppleCare and cost me nothing further
out of pocket).

I've had my own rants about iTunes, which is perhaps great as a front
end to the iTunes Music Store but I don't buy music that way nor do I
think in terms of "playlists." I find the metaphors used by iTunes to
be cumbersome.

Absolutely correct to all these observations.
