However, when I ran "Verify Disk" I got an error message: Incorrect

fixed all of them. Running the Verify Disk again found no errors.
This may have been the problem.
I'll check the Energy Saver Preferences and make changes as you suggest.
Then I'm going to bed and see if everything is ok in the morning.
If there are no further crashes, eventually you should try turning this
back on, because disks will last a lot longer when they're not spun up
continuously. As well, frequently spinning down and back up is hard on
them, so choose an inactivity time length that fits your use of the
computer.
Well, unfortunately this morning the desktop readily appeared but with the
spinning pizza wheel.
The mouse pointer will move normally but the mouse does nothing when
clicked.
I shut down using the power button and restarted about five minutes later.
It booted up normally with the only immediate difference being that the
error message I had been getting did not appear.
However, instead of functioning normally as it had been doing, this time
when I clicked on a menu item, I got the spinning pizza wheel again.
So now I'm running the Apple Hardware Test and will report the results when
it is done.

I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.
